The idea for Nexgen Scholarship Foundation Inc.

Was born out of a personal journey of resilience, transformation, and a deep desire to create opportunities for others.

In early 2017, as co-founder Derek Pew was preparing to graduate college, he reflected on the path that had led him there—one marked by struggle, self-doubt, and ultimately, triumph. As a First-Generation College student, Derek had faced immense challenges navigating the world of higher education. After high school, he attempted college four times at three different institutions, but each time, he found himself unable to complete even a single semester. Convinced that college wasn’t for him, he left school behind and took a job at a local uniform delivery company to make ends meet.

Mission & Values

However, life had other plans. A vehicle accident while working that job became a pivotal moment for Derek.

He realized that he wanted more out of life—more opportunities, more stability, and more purpose. So, he made the bold decision to go back to college for the fifth time, this time at his fourth institution. What he didn’t know was how profoundly this experience would change him.
About

Over the next five semesters, Derek went from being a habitual college dropout to an engaged and thriving student leader.

He became the Student Senate President, a Student Ambassador, a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member, and the recipient of one of the college’s highest honors—the President’s Medallion.

Through these experiences, Derek came to understand that college was about much more than earning a degree. It was a platform for personal growth, leadership development, and community engagement. By getting involved on campus, volunteering, and excelling academically, he realized that education had the power to shape futures and open doors in ways he had never imagined.

Values

With this newfound perspective

Derek developed a deep passion for advocating for First-Generation College students—those who, like him, faced uncertainty, financial struggles, and a lack of guidance in higher education.

He knew firsthand the barriers they encountered and wanted to create a support system to help others succeed.

Thus, the idea for Nexgen Scholarship Foundation Inc. was formed. Co-founded by Derek Pew and Shannon McNichol, the foundation is dedicated to breaking down the barriers that prevent First-Generation students from achieving their college dreams. Through fundraising and networking efforts, Nexgen aims to provide scholarships, mentorship, and resources to help students navigate the complexities of higher education.

Nexgen Scholarship Foundation Inc. is more than just an organization—it’s a movement to ensure that students who aspire to change their family’s trajectory through college are given the support, connections, and opportunities they need to thrive.
